5-star quick review: Princess of Tyrone (Katie Hamstead)

tyroneSuper enjoyable YA adventurous read. It’s very hard to pull off a satisfying Sleeping Beauty retelling without the heroine coming off as completely passive, but Katie Hamstead pulls it off. Apolline grows up in secret with her three fairy guardians on a distant planet (yep, planet – this fairy tale retelling is set in SPACE) where she learns to hunt magical beasts, take care of herself, and make friends with pirates…and princes. Prince Allard is betrothed to the enchanted hidden-away Princess of Tyrone who he has never met, and won’t until the time of her curse has passed. He’s a good prince, more interesting than most Prince Charmings, and his growing love for the lively and strong-willed huntress he meets one day is believable and very cute. I’m very curious to see how this series is going to evolve, combining magic with a Firefly-like universe, and the descendants of fairy tale heroes all bound together by Snow White/Cinderella/Rapunzel, etc’s ancient drama and feuds. Really interesting stuff, and a quick read. Available on Amazon for free with Kindle Unlimited.
