Blurp about Blurbs

The sequel to “Alpha’s Heir” went up a few days ago, which means recently went through the most dreaded moments in the writing process: the blurb (cue dramatic music). The word even sounds awful…blurb. I know people who can belch sounding more classy than how the english language requires that word be spoken.

There are a lot of guides out there:

General guidelines and tips of Dos and Don’ts: http://www.blurb.com/blog/writing-blurbs-for-novels

Plot-centric blurbs: http://www.digitalbookworld.com/2013/4-easy-steps-to-an-irresistable-book-blurb/

Plus character-centric blurbs, and on and on

But none of these helpful templates and guides are really that helpful when it comes down to the blank page and having to condense an entire plot into 5 jazzy sentences. So here’s a dip into the collaborative writing process.

Let’s start with the raw beginning. Picture Annie at work, slaving away at the day job, typing typing. And she’s typing a blurb for something completely different.

Blurb Draft #1:

Cleo thinks she has it all: she’s the Alpha of her clan and a CEO bear shifter billionaire about to finish up one of the best deals of her career. But when a clan of annoyed witches hexes her to the middle of no where with no way to return to civilization, Cleo must trust in the kindness of two handsome strangers to get back to her old life. That is, if she still wants to go back after meeting her rescuers.

Titus and Connor’s ranch is a sanctuary for the lost and magical. But even with all of their experiences wrestling unicorns and cleaning up after the centaurs, neither of them know what to expect when a beautiful bear shifter wanders in and demands the use of their phone. And they don’t know if they ever want her to leave.

This sizzling book for mature readers involves sexy threeways, barnyard action, and a love so big it needs three.

Blurb Draft #2:

Jess then gets the blurb and sends back a new version, spicing up the language, giving it a bit more punch, and taking out a lot of my adjective fat.

Cleo thinks she has it all: she’s wildly successful CEO, Alpha of a powerful bear shifter clan and a total knockout. But when a clan of annoyed witches hexes her to the middle of nowhere, Cleo must trust in the kindness of two handsome ranch hands to get back to her old life. Will she get her revenge?  Or will her rescuers change her heart?

Titus and Connor are best friends who share everything. They own a ranch that serves as a sanctuary for the supernatural, isolated from the world. When a beautiful bear shifter is stranded at their ranch, have they finally found someone they both can love?

This sizzling book for mature readers involves a literal roll in the haywet and wild firefighting and a love that’s truly magic.

Blurb Draft #3:

To which I reply, putting a bit of the plot back in there to try and be more enticing:

Cleo thinks she has it all: she’s a wildly successful CEO, Alpha of a powerful bear shifter clan and a total knockout. But when a clan of annoyed witches hexes her to the middle of nowhere, Cleo must trust in the kindness of two handsome ranch hands to get back to her old life.

Titus and Connor are best friends who share everything. But when their ranch, a sanctuary for supernatural creatures, is threatened by the outside world, they must rely on their strength, and the intelligence of their newest resident, Cleo, to save the day. But will Cleo be too distracted by her own revenge and the sexiness of her new friends to help?

This sizzling book for mature readers involves a literal roll in the hay, wet and wild firefighting, and a love that’s truly magic.

Final Draft #4:

We then get home, drink a bottle of wine and two hard ciders, and get to the final draft. When putting together the keyword list, we realized that we’d completely left out of the blurb Titus’s identity as a dragon shifter and Connor’s psychic abilities, which help make this book pop.

Cleo has it all: she’s a wildly successful CEO, Alpha of a powerful bear shifter clan, and a total knockout. But when a business deal puts her on the wrong side of a powerful coven, she’s magically exiled to the middle of nowhere. Cleo is forced to let go, trusting in the kindness of two handsome ranch hands to get back to her old life.

Titus and Connor are best friends who share everything. Titus, a cursed dragon shifter, and Connor, gifted with supernatural intuition, are not used to company. When their ranch, a sanctuary for magical creatures, is threatened by outside forces, the men must rely on their strength–and Cleo’s resourcefulness–to save the day. Will Cleo be too distracted by her own plan for revenge and the toned bodies of her new friends to realize she may have found her true home?

This sizzling book for mature readers involves a literal roll in the hay, wet and wild firefighting, and a love that’s magical to the power of three.
